Attorney Bio

 John Camillus is a trial lawyer and the founder of the Law Offices of John C. Camillus, LLC.  His practice is focused on civil litigation, including employment discrimination, civil rights, personal injury, wrongful death, product liability, complex commercial litigation, contract disputes, consumer protection, class actions, and all aspects of appellate representation.

EXPERIENCE 

There are three critical perspectives in any civil litigation -- the plaintiff’s, the defendant’s, and the court’s.
 John possesses a rare blend of experience giving him insight into all three of these perspectives, having practiced as a plaintiffs’ lawyer, worked as a defense lawyer, and clerked for a federal judge. 

Prior to starting this firm, John was an attorney at Cooper & Elliott, where his practice focused on representing plaintiffs in a broad range of civil matters.
 Prior to joining Cooper & Elliott, John was a litigator with the international law firm of Jones Day.  While at Jones Day, John worked on civil and criminal matters at both the trial and appellate level.  His experience at Jones Day included successful representation of clients in various tort, contract, criminal, and securities matters.

Before joining Jones Day, John served as a law clerk for the Honorable R. Guy Cole, Jr., of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
  As a clerk, John reviewed appellate briefs, prepared bench memoranda, and drafted opinions in a wide breadth of areas of law, from employment discrimination, commercial litigation, and civil rights matters to criminal sentencing, constitutional issues, and trial procedure.

John’s experience has included the following matters:

Product Liability


- Represented the family of a man who died in a fire allegedly caused by a faulty home appliance.

- Represented the family of a young mother and three children under the age of four killed in a fire allegedly caused by a faulty electrical cord.


Civil Rights and Employment Discrimination

- Represented a public school teacher terminated after adopting minority children and enrolling them in the school system.


- Represented a young man who suffered traumatic injury as a result of excessive force used against him by local police officers.

- Represented the two young women whose claims of sexual harassment within the Ohio Attorney General’s office led to the resignation of the Attorney General.

- Represented a local physician in a gender discrimination and retaliation lawsuit.

Contract Disputes

- Represented multi-platinum rap artist Juvenile in a contract dispute.

- Represented purchaser of residential property in a lawsuit based on the seller’s misrepresentation of the characteristics of the property.

Personal Injury and Wrongful Death

- Represented numerous individuals seriously injured in automobile crashes.

- Represented the family of a young boy killed when a porch roof collapsed on him.

- Represented
the family of a sheriff's deputy killed while on duty in the wrongful death claim resulting from his on-the-job death.

- Represented the family of a man electrocuted in his own home due to a negligently installed air conditioning unit.

Appeals

- Represented the family of the victim of a fatal car accident before the Ohio Supreme Court.
  In a landmark decision, the Court unanimously held that the common law public-duty rule has been abrogated by Ohio’s immunity statute.

- Represented numerous clients in courts of appeals across Ohio and in federal appellate courts across the country.

Commercial Litigation

- Represented a Fortune 500 company in a matter that led to a settlement in excess of $250 million for client.

- Represented telecommunications provider in dispute with competitor regarding unfair competition.

- Represented franchise owner in complex dispute with franchisor over alleged breach of the franchise agreement and tortious interference with the franchise's business.

EDUCATION

 

John received his law degree from Yale Law School.  At Yale, John was an editor for the Yale Law & Policy Review and was named a Schell fellow.  John also served as the President of the Initiative for Public Interest Law at Yale and worked with the South Asia Human Rights Documentation Centre in New Delhi, India.

 

John spent the academic year prior to enrolling at Yale in Valladolid, Spain, studying at la Universidad de Valladolid as a Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar.

 

John received his B.A. in Philosophy from Ohio Wesleyan University, graduating first in his class.  He graduated phi beta kappa and summa cum laude, and was a First-Team All-Conference and First-Team Academic All-American basketball player.  At OWU, John was on the Philosophy Student Board, was a member of the Student Judicial Board, volunteered with Big Pal/Little Pal, was the recipient of the Easton Prize given to the outstanding senior philosophy major, and graduated with University and Departmental Honors.

ASSOCIATIONS AND BAR ADMISSIONS


John is admitted to practice before the state courts of Ohio, the United States District Courts for the Southern and Northern Districts of Ohio, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.  He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Association, the American Association for Justice, the Ohio Association for Justice, and the Central Ohio Association for Justice.
